OUR PURPOSE & HISTORY

At the Girls Choral Academy our mission is Giving Girls a Voice.  We provide a nurturing and creative space where girls of all ages regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic status can form a positive sense of self as they experience the rewards of a successful musical education and goal accomplishment. Founded in 1997, we are proud of the musical gift we offer to the community of West Michigan.

Girls develop vocal technique, musical skills, creativity, expressive artistry, and an awareness of music from many cultures. Our program encourages girls to respect the uniqueness of others, to take risks that foster individual growth, and to collaborate as a team to create something bigger than themselves. In addition to performance, girls have opportunities to attend choir camp and travel.

The singers that make up our Downtown Choirs come from all over West Michigan and represent a wide variety of school systems. These include students from public, private, charter, and parochial schools as well as home-school students. Firmly committed to diversity in membership and repertoire, the Girls Choral Academy offers scholarships for girls who wish to participate in any of the tuition-based choirs.

The after-school choirs are located in neighborhood elementary schools in Grand Rapids. These Neighborhood Choirs operate in cooperation with the Grand Rapids Public School System, and currently include Southwest Academy-Bilugual, Buchanan Elementary, and Cesar E. Chavez Elementary serving 3rd through 5th grade girls.

To join, call us at 616-361-6111 or contact us.

Our programs provide a safe and welcoming space after school, diligent arts instruction, exposure to a variety of musical arts through collaboration, and give students a growing sense of themselves as singers and as strong young women.
